one beer job (Pail Ales), 2023
“if I had to guess, I would say it’s a one beer job....”

This rural colloquialism—gathered from the corners of Canada—serves as a unit of measurement indicative of the time passed. one beer job (Pail Ales), stretches this expression to reflect upon the precarious and inconsistently-regulated economies endemic to the arts. Often times, when monetary pay is not possible—for whatever reason—beer becomes a proximate fiat used to compensate one’s labour.

Throughout the duration of the works’ installation, each pail’s ice is rotated to maintain optimal drinking temperature. As the contents melt away, the installed work seeks to insulate the invitation to celebrate collaborators at the edges of making, museology, and exhibition-making. In keeping beverages cold, the work reciprocates the care and warmth of these central collaborative voices.
